Someone buys from your store for the first time. You send the automated order confirmation. Then silence. Three months later you wonder why they never came back, and you run a Facebook ad to acquire a new customer, which Harvard Business Review puts at 5 to 25 times the cost of keeping the one you already had.
This is the ecommerce funnel that most stores build by accident. The purchase confirmation is the last automated message a customer receives, and everything after that depends on someone remembering to send a campaign. Omnisend's 2026 benchmark report, drawn from more than 20 billion campaign emails and 470 million automated sends across 27,000-plus brands, found automated emails generated $3.41 in revenue per email sent versus $0.155 for one-off campaign emails, a 22x gap. Post-purchase sequences are one of the automation types building that gap, and most stores never build one past the order confirmation.
Post-purchase email automation with ActiveCampaign and Shopify takes a few hours to build, and it gives your first customer the same automated treatment as your hundredth: welcome, upsell, re-engage, and referral. No manual lists. No forgotten campaigns. No silences.
Prerequisites
- An ActiveCampaign account (the Starter plan includes marketing automation but caps each automation at five actions, so check the plan limits against the sequences in this guide)
- A Shopify store with recent orders for testing
- The ActiveCampaign integration installed from the Shopify App Store (free)
- About 2 hours to build the full lifecycle
Step 1: Connect ActiveCampaign to Shopify for post-purchase email automation
Go to your Shopify admin panel and open Settings, then Apps and sales channels. Search for ActiveCampaign in the Shopify App Store and install the integration. ActiveCampaign will ask you to log in and authorise the connection.
Once connected, ActiveCampaign starts syncing your Shopify contacts, orders, and products automatically. This means a new purchase creates or updates a contact in ActiveCampaign with the order details, the products bought, and the total spent. You can check the sync status in ActiveCampaign under Integrations, then Shopify.
The integration maps these Shopify fields into ActiveCampaign so you can use them in your automations:
- Customer name and email (synced automatically)
- Order total and currency
- Products purchased with SKU and quantity
- Order date and fulfilment status
- Customer lifetime value (updated with each order)
Step 2: Build the welcome sequence for new customers
Create a new automation in ActiveCampaign triggered by "Order created" with a filter for first-time customers only. You can identify first-time buyers by checking if the customer's lifetime value equals the current order total, or by using ActiveCampaign's built-in "New Customer" tag.
The sequence should include three emails spaced across the first week:
Email 1 (1 hour after purchase): Thank the customer and tell them what to expect. Include their order details, a shipping tracker link, and a link to your size guide or care instructions. Keep it helpful, not promotional.
Email 2 (3 days after purchase): Cross-sell based on what they bought. If they ordered a camera, recommend a case. If they ordered running shoes, recommend socks. Keep the recommendation to a single product with a clear link.
Email 3 (7 days after purchase): Ask for a review and offer a small discount on their next order. The review request works best when it includes a direct link to the product review page with the order pre-filled.
Pro tip: Set a tag in ActiveCampaign when the third email sends. Use this tag to exclude recent buyers from your broadcast campaigns so you do not send a "back in stock" email to someone who just bought that item.
Step 3: Create the post-purchase upsell flow
Create a second automation triggered 7 days after purchase. This one targets customers who bought a product that has a natural upsell path. If you sell software, the upsell is the premium tier. If you sell apparel, the upsell is a matching set.
Use ActiveCampaign's conditional content to show different upsells based on what was purchased. You can set up product categories in Shopify and map them to different email variants in ActiveCampaign. For example, a customer who bought a skincare set sees a different upsell email than someone who bought a candle.
The upsell email works best when it frames the recommendation as completing the experience, not as a second transaction. "Here is what our customers usually add next" sounds helpful. "You left something in your cart" sounds like a nag.
Step 4: Set up the re-engagement campaign
Create a third automation that triggers after 45 to 60 days of no purchase. This win-back sequence has three emails spaced a week apart, and each one escalates the incentive.
Email 1 (Day 45): A simple "We miss you" with a link back to the store and a personalised product recommendation. No discount yet. Some customers just needed a reminder.
Email 2 (Day 52): A "Here is something new" email showcasing products launched since their last purchase. If you have new arrivals, this is the email for them.
Email 3 (Day 60): A final offer with a discount code. Make it specific: "Here is 15 percent off your next order, just for you." If they do not convert on this email, move them to a dormant list and stop sending promotional emails until they come back organically.
Step 5: Add the referral incentive
The fourth automation triggers 14 days after purchase and asks for a referral. This timing works because the customer has received their order and had time to form an opinion about the product. A referral request on day one feels premature. On day 14, it feels earned.
ActiveCampaign can track referrals using unique coupon codes. Each customer gets a personalised referral link that applies a discount to both the referrer and the referee. The email should say something like: "Share this link with a friend. They get 10 percent off their first order, and you get 10 percent off your next one."
| Automation | Trigger | Timing | Emails |
|---|---|---|---|
| Welcome | Order created, first-time customer | 1 hour, 3 days, 7 days after purchase | 3 |
| Upsell | 7 days after purchase, product has an upsell path | Day 7 | 1 |
| Re-engagement | 45 to 60 days with no repeat purchase | Day 45, 52, 60 | 3 |
| Referral | 14 days after purchase | Day 14 | 1 |
Nine emails a quarter, none of them typed by hand
Your store stops relying on one-off campaigns and starts running a continuous lifecycle. Every customer enters the same automated flow regardless of when they bought or how they found you. Klaviyo's post-purchase benchmark data puts open rates on this email type almost 17 percent above the average automated email, because the recipient just handed over money and is paying attention to what happens next. Klaviyo's 2026 benchmark across 183,000-plus brands puts the whole picture in revenue terms: automated flows earn $1.94 per recipient against $0.11 for one-off campaigns, an 18x gap, with post-purchase flows averaging $0.85 and the top 10 percent of stores reaching $7.40. That attention window is what the welcome, upsell, re-engagement and referral sequences are built to use.
Over a quarter, the automation handles thousands of individual email decisions that would otherwise need a marketing manager's attention. The welcome sequence fires when a new customer orders. The upsell fires when the timing is right. The re-engagement fires when the silence gets too long. The referral fires when the customer is most likely to recommend you.
We have built similar lifecycle automations for Klaviyo SMS versus email for ecommerce and for AI churn prediction that flags customers before they leave. The principle is the same: build the automation once, let it run, and focus your team's energy on the customers who need a human conversation.
Frequently asked questions
What do I need to set up post-purchase email automation?
You need an ActiveCampaign account, a Shopify store, and the ActiveCampaign integration installed from the Shopify App Store. The Shopify-ActiveCampaign integration is free. ActiveCampaign's Starter plan includes marketing automation but caps each automation at five actions, so check the plan limits against the sequences in this guide.
How many emails should a post-purchase sequence have?
Start with three in the welcome sequence: an immediate thank-you, a 3-day cross-sell, and a 7-day review request. Add the upsell, re-engagement and referral sequences as separate automations once the welcome sequence is working well. The full lifecycle is four automations with nine emails total across the first 60 days.
How long does it take to set up?
The integration takes about 15 minutes. Building the full lifecycle of four automations takes around 2 hours for someone who knows ActiveCampaign. Double that if you are learning the platform for the first time.
Does this replace Klaviyo?
ActiveCampaign and Klaviyo both handle email automation well. ActiveCampaign has stronger CRM features and lead scoring, while Klaviyo leads on ecommerce-specific segmentation and predictive analytics. Pick the one that fits your broader stack. If you want to understand the channel comparison better, see our Klaviyo SMS versus email comparison.
Can I add SMS to this workflow?
Yes. ActiveCampaign supports SMS automations alongside email. You can add SMS as a second channel for time-sensitive messages like order confirmations, shipping updates, or the re-engagement discount code, though it needs the SMS add-on and, for US recipients, A2P 10DLC registration before you can send. ActiveCampaign's SMS marketing page covers the requirements and pricing.
